How To Detect Roof Problems

If you’re concerned that you may have a problem with your roof, follow these steps.

  • Inspect the exterior of the roof. Check for any missing or loose roof tiles or shingles.
  • Remove any shrubs or tree branches that may have fallen onto the roof – if left unattended, they may cause further damage.
  • If you have a roof-mounted HVAC unit, make sure the drain pipe is working correctly and not leaking onto your roof.
  • Check your ceilings. Often your leak will cause the ceiling drywall to bulge or become discolored. Note any irregularities or spots.
  • Inspect the attic interior. Attic inspection is very important; while the outside of your roof may look fine and your ceilings might not look like they need repair, your attic might reveal signs of a mold, wood discoloration and dry rot. A small leak will leave marks on the underside of the roof.
